NHL Team Superstitions

Superstitions and sports are synonymous especially in the NHL. Three main ones stick out to me when it comes to hockey teams as a whole.

Playoff beards.

Once playoff time comes, players forgo their beard trimmers and let their hair grow. Does this actually constitute winning? Maybe. Though it does make for great bearded pictures of the team who wins The Stanley Cup.

Hands off the conference championship trophy

Traditionally, NHL teams have refused to touch the conference trophies, thinking it would prevent them from grabbing hold of the Stanley Cup. In the last few years, several teams have touched their respective conference trophy and actually gone on to win The Stanley Cup. Guess it’s up to each team’s superstition.

Do not step on the logo

In the home locker room, there’s usually a giant team logo in the middle of the room. To step on the logo, even accidentally, can be seen as a slight and bad luck or a sign of disrespect. Even fans who have team rugs in their homes won’t step on the logo.

What’s your team’s superstition?
